Red Dragon (2002)
Try to digest this sentence without re-reading it: Red Dragon is the remake of Manhunter (1986), the prequel to Silence of the Lambs (1991), and the first sequel to Hannibal (2001).
Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes) killed the families and stuck mirrors in their eyes because... um... uh... Well, anyway, he kills Phillip Seymour Hoffman as revenge for printing nasty things about him. He's compelled to kill blind squeeze Reba (Emily Watson) as yet another sacrifice to the Red Dragon (the figure in the William Blake painting that controls him), but at the last second it appears that he shoots himself, and leaves Watson to escape his house (which he's set on fire), just moments before it explodes. (The one thing that survives the fire is Dolarhyde's journal, which is in a safe.)
Oh, but Dolarhyde isn't really dead — the remains inside belong to the smarmy guy who was trying to get it on with Reba. Dolarhyde shows up at Will's (Edward Norton's) house in Florida, one thing leads to another, and Will's wife (Mary Louise Parker, who doesn't die of a terminal illness for a change) is the one who finally shoots and kills Dolarhyde. The picture ends with Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) being told there's a young, pretty FBI agent who wants to talk to him — Clarice Starling, of course.
